Project report GreenH2SZ

Publisher Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST

How much will it cost to use green hydrogen from overseas to produce green steel in Salzgitter by 2030? And which technologies may be used? What technical challenges and energy losses occur in import chains using ammonia or methane as medium to transport hydrogen? Which ships are available for the transport of hydrogen? And how much will it cost in comparison to locally produced hydrogen in Lower Saxony?

The “GreenH2SZ” project of the Hydrogen Campus Salzgitter identified solutions and evaluated how a sufficient supply with green hydrogen may be achieved for Salzgitter by 2030. The project led by MAN Energy Solutions and Fraunhofer IST investigated the realization with both own production and imports. This reflects the European Union’s market ramp-up targets specifying that by 2030, 20 million tons of hydrogen should be available in the EU, of which half will be imported via international supply chains. In the project report, you will learn more about the costs and availability of the necessary technologies and infrastructure for the import of hydrogen via Wilhelmshaven to Salzgitter. You will also see regional plans and next steps enabling the use of hydrogen to decarbonize the industrial and mobility sector in Salzgitter.
